My options at that time were, in alphabetic order,

I decided to use Tinkerer and, soon, the first version of my blog was online.

In 2015, Software Carpentry decided to migrate from Pandoc to Jekyll and I end up using Jekyll more. After some time using Jekyll due my contribution to Software Carpentry, I migrated my blog to Jekyll in 2016 and adopted the Millennial theme by Paul Le.

Spreadsheets: Headers

During my undergraduate, I barely used any spreadsheet software. One of my friends told me that spreadsheet software helped to turn the personal computer popular and Wikipedia can confirm it:

VisiCalc was the first electronic spreadsheet on a microcomputer,[9] and it helped turn the Apple II computer into a popular and widely used system.

Why I didn’t used spreadsheet? That’s a good question. Probably because I was more interested in learn Python. In the last two years, I spent a lot of time with spreadsheet software in front of me and I collected a long list of things that I hated in Microsoft Office Excel, LibreOffice Calc and Google Sheet. This is the first post of a serie covering my list.

National Coding Week: Full Stack of Pancakes

My friend Niall Beard recommended me to Sophie Ashcroft as a Git instructor for the National Coding Week activity that Sophie is organising with other members of Full Stack of Pancakes. After exchanged a few emails, the information that I have to try to plan the lesson was

  • 2 hours long
  • basic level
  • mix of backgrounds
  • focus on motivation

It is going to be a challenge and based on some of my previous experience teaching Git, the motivation part is very hard if you work with just one file or with isolated files, i.e. that don’t interact with any other. Over dinner, I was thinking of what game I could implemente in Liquid template language in less than 2 hours that could be interesting for learners to get motivated to learn Git. The solution, at the moment, is a Rock Paper Scissors game. If you look at the Git repository, it only has

Today is the thirday and last day of GUADEC 2017 as a conference. There will be more three day as a unconference.

On the previous two days, I learned how much a integrated ecosystem of software application can make the user experience more pleasured and, for the case of first time users, more friendly. Unfortunately, have the completely ecosystem is hard to implement and keep consistence between the softwares is even more difficult.

My E-mail (client) Journey

E-mail can be a very difficult thing to deal with but is the only federated wide-used system out there so we are stuck with it for now. In this post I will review how I try to domesticate that beast.

My first e-mail

I created my first e-mail account in 2004. It was a MSN Hotmail account since at that time everyone was using MSN Hotmail to chat. 2004 was also the year that Google announced Gmail but I wasn’t cool enough to receive a invitation. I didn’t used too much my MSN Hotmail account because at the time I didn’t have internet at home.

Carros 3

Every (and Another) Day

I know that I failed to write more on this blog. I still need to write about “The Hidden School” but today I will write a little about “Every Day” and “Another Day”, two books by David Levithan.

Both books are about the romance between A and Rhiannon. The first book, Every Day, follows A and the second book, Another Day, follows Rhiannon. What make the romance between the two hard is that every day A wake up in a different body.

The Hidden School

One of the books that I enjoyed reading was “The Way of the Peaceful Warrior” by Dan Millman. I read the book many years after I watched the “Peaceful Warrior”, a film adaption of Dan’s book.

Today is the release of the newest of Dan’s books, “The Hidden School”, and that is the book that I will be reading in the next few weeks.

Reboot

Some times things break or stop working to push you to do something that was on your to-do list for a long time. I had some problems with the virtual private server (VPS) that hosted my web site last month and because of it I had to configure a new VPS. Taking the opportunity I decided to update the theme that I used on my web site. I hope that you like the new one.
