Reflections about serving at Software Carpentry Steering Committee in 2016

Last year I wrote a blog post talk about my activities on Software Carpentry Steering <../../../2015/12/11/swc> and I will do the same here for the 2016 term.

Assessment
I completely fail on this field but I discovered that assessment isn't just try to make sense to some data. During the Measuring the Impact of Workshops I learned from Beth Duckles that the way that you make the questions can impact on your results. At least this is one thing that the next Steering Committee doesn't need to worry to much since Data Carpentry now has a staff that is working on this issue.

To close 2015, a nice quote that I read today:
"People deny reality. They fight against real feelings caused by real circumstances. They build mental worlds of shoulds, oughts, and might-have-beens. Real changes begin with real appraisal and acceptance of what is. Then realistic action is possible."
These are the words of David Reynolds, an American exponent of Japanese Morita psychotherapy. He is speaking of personal behavior (...)

This week, October 20–26, 2014, held the Open Access Week (see the announcement) and will end with Mozilla Festival that has a awesome science track. This post has some thoughts about math and open access and this two events.
Open Access and Math
From Budapest Open Access Initiative we have
"By "open access" to this literature, we mean its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited."

Import Lesson - Is it Possible?
Note
This post was previous published at blog.rgaiacs.com. Some links might got broken during the conversion from reStructuredText to Markdown.
Some time ago, Greg Wilson wrote about the idea of import lessons. This is food for thought about it.
Version Control and Possibility to Fork Lessons
For individual lesson we should use a modern distribute version control system like Git or Mercurial.
The problem is what use to deal with the collection of lessons when import each one. We can think in use Git Submodule or Git Subtree but from my experience the better approach is use a tool on top of Git or Mercurial like git-repo. This approach will avoid the user learn the complexity of Git Submodule and let the user choose the version control system more suitable to he/she needs.
